Regis Resources (ASX: RRL) has told the market that diamond drilling beneath its Rosemont underground mine in Western Australia has traced the host quartz dolerite unit a further 600 metres south of the current Stage 3 resource boundary. The newly defined segment runs 20 to 30 metres thick and remains open along strike and down dip, which points to a meaningful new runway for underground mine life at the company’s Duketon Gold Operations. For a mid-tier producer spending heavily to bring Stage 3 into production, cheap resource growth directly below existing infrastructure is exactly the kind of result shareholders want to see.
What the drilling returned
Four diamond core holes drilled down plunge of Stage 3 returned consistent mineralisation, headlined by 1.6 metres at 8.8 g/t gold from 712.4 metres and 3.3 metres at 3.7 g/t from 690 metres. Other intercepts included 3.4 metres at 2.4 g/t and 1 metre at 4.4 g/t from 920 metres. These are narrow, deep and broadly spaced hits rather than a bulk tonnage discovery, and they fit the known Rosemont signature of high-grade quartz veins wrapped in a lower-grade sulphide halo. Full details sit in the company’s filings on the ASX announcements platform.
Why the timing matters
Regis has guided to 360,000 to 400,000 ounces of group production in FY27, with Rosemont Stage 3 slated to reach commercial production late in the financial year. Infill drilling is now underway to link the southern extension back to the Stage 3 resource, with a broader exploration update covering Duketon, Tropicana and McPhillamys expected in the second quarter of FY27. Converting these intercepts into reserves would push Duketon further out on the mine plan without the cost of a greenfields find. It mirrors what we saw when Catalyst Metals lifted its Trident reserve to underpin a ten-year WA plan.
The read for ASX gold investors
With bullion trading at historically elevated levels and central bank buying still firm according to the World Gold Council, producers are being rewarded for extending known systems rather than chasing acquisitions. Brownfields success stories are stacking up across the goldfields, from Regis at Duketon to smaller explorers such as Kalgoorlie Gold Mining at Lighthorse. Investors should note the caveats here, though. The drilling is wide spaced, the intervals are thin, and nothing has been classified as resource or reserve yet.
