Northern Star Costs Jump 20% to $3,217/oz in September Quarter as Takeover Standoff Continues

Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST) has reported a weaker September quarter, with gold output falling roughly 19% to just under 364,000 ounces and all-in sustaining costs climbing 20% to $3,217 per ounce. The result lands while the company is still defending its independence after rejecting an unsolicited $27 billion proposal from Gold Fields, which it called opportunistic.

Why costs jumped

Management pointed to the integration of its new $1.8 billion mill at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines operations as the main driver. Ramping up large processing infrastructure usually brings higher unit costs before throughput settles, and investors will be watching whether the second half shows the benefit. Net mine cash flow was $210 million for the quarter, and the shares were trading around $24.62 after the update.

Guidance unchanged

Importantly, Northern Star held its full-year production guidance at 1.50 to 1.65 million ounces, which implies a stronger run rate in the coming quarters. That matters in the takeover context, because a board arguing the business is undervalued needs delivery to back it up. It also follows a similar pattern across the sector, with Evolution Mining holding its FY27 guidance after its own softer quarterly output. Broker commentary suggested several large ASX producers still came in ahead of UBS forecasts, even as sector costs rose.

What it means for ASX gold investors

Higher costs are a margin story rather than a demand story, and gold prices have stayed elevated even after a rough September, with strong ETF buying noted in our look at World Gold Council data. For investors, the key questions are whether cost inflation proves temporary and whether Gold Fields returns with a higher offer. Our earlier coverage of the standoff between the two companies shows no sign of a quick resolution. Readers can also track broader demand trends through the World Gold Council.
