Two significant incidents at the Nelson Point Iron Ore operations confirmed the need to redesign chute door arrangements. BHP Billiton Iron Ore established concise chute door identification labelling and defined chute door operation protocols. The new design ensures that the risks involved with the access to the chutes are controlled, whilst at the same time, the operation and maintenance of the chutes are not compromised.
The design of the door incorporates an inner safety guard that limits access to hazards that exist beyond the door seals. The doors come complete with laser-cut identification signs and “anti-loose” door fasteners.
