Company supplies design package to Pilbara

  • Published: 22/05/2008

Aurox Resources is currently developing the Balla-Balla magnetite deposits in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and has commissioned Siemens to undertake the engineering and design of the electrical scopes of supply for various packages.

The packages include the Mine Site Process Plant, Port Handling Facilities, located at Port Headland, and associated electrical infrastructures required for the successful implementation and long term operation of the mine.

The ore processing plant has a design capacity enabling an annual production of six million metric tons of iron ore concentrate.

The plant and associated infrastructure has been designed to accommodate a planned medium-term upgrade in its processing capacity to ten million metric tons per annum.

Siemens will engineer, design and manufacture wraparound motors for the SAG and Ball Mills for the Balla-Balla magnetite project.

The drive systems for these motors will be based on SimineCIS Mill GD.

The SimineCIS Mill GD gearless drive system avoids any contact between the rotating mill and the static parts of the motors.

This enables continuous workflow without maintenance on the gears and pinions.

The variable-speed drives are controlled with the help of the patented Transvektor-control principle which ensures that the operating point of the motor can be exactly adapted to changing requirements — for processing different material hardnesses or running in different modes.

This also ensures convenient positioning in inspection modes at very low speeds, such as inching or creeping.

Soft stopping and restarting significantly reduces wear.

According to Siemens, due to the absence of gears, maintenance and repair costs are considerably lower than for conventional drives, while shorter downtimes and longer service intervals increase availability. Moreover, gearless drives are more efficient and consume less energy, resulting in reduced operating costs.
