ABB delivers drive systems for Karara iron ore project

  • Published: 17/11/2009

ABB will deliver the drive systems that will be used in two new High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at the Karara iron ore project in Western Australia.

The company will deliver polycom drive systems each consisting of two 2800 kW squirrel cage motors, two MV frequency converters and two converter transformers.

Many of the HPGRs used in the minerals industry are currently driven by variable speed drive systems.

These provide operational flexibility through a variable speed range, making them ideal for the processing of inhomogeneous types of ore at variable throughput rates, ABB says.

By providing sustainable solutions for HPGR applications, ABB has set the standard for efficiency in the minerals industry.

ABB recently commissioned four HPGR twin drive systems for Thyssen Krupp Polysius’ Boddington gold mine.

The Karara Iron Ore project is located 225 km east of Geraldton and is being developed through a joint venture between Gindalbie Metals and Chinese steel producer, Anshan Iron & Steel.

Starting in 2011, Karara will deliver approximately 10 mtpa of high grade magnetite concentrate, blast furnace quality pellets and direct shipping ore hematite.
