FOUR young people working in Western Australia’s resources sector have been selected as finalists in the Chamber of Minerals and Energy (CME) sponsored 2007 WA Resource Apprentice or Trainee of the Year Award.
The finalists are Alan Doig (CCI Training Services) employed by Apprenticeships Australia at Minara Resources Murrin Murrin operations, Drew Fletcher (Caterpillar Institute) employed by WesTrac in the South West, Haines Parker (Pilbara TAFE) employed by Rio Tinto Iron Ore, and Melissa Roguski (Bunbury Business College), employed by Iluka Resources at North Capel.
The high calibre of nominees in the 2007 WA Resource Apprentice or Trainee of the Year Award augurs well for the future of the sector according to CME Chief Executive, Tim Shanahan.
“It is very pleasing to see that the resources sector is attracting such fine people into apprenticeships and traineeships,” Shanahan said.
“The industry offers incredible opportunities for career growth and development, while rewarding workers with excellent remuneration.”
“In an environment of chronic skills shortages, apprentices and trainees in the resources sector have terrific long-term employment prospects.”
“Our sector is working hard to encourage more people to prepare themselves for careers in the industry, and we commend all the apprentices and trainees, and their employers and training organisations, who participated in the 2007 WA Resource Apprentice or Trainee of the Year Award,” Shanahan said.
The overall winner of the 2007 Resource Apprentice or Trainee of the Year Award will be announced at the WA Training Awards on August 17.
The WA Training Awards 2007 are coordinated by the Department of Education and Training and the State Training Board.
