Union unable to stop BMA FIFO

The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) have been unable to change BMA’s plan for a complete FIFO workforce.
It had previously met with the miner to discuss BMA’s aim to make the work force at the Caval Ridge coal mine 100% fly in fly out.
The miner had earlier agreed to source at least 30% of its labour from the mine’s local population in Moranbah, Queensland.
A town meeting will be held tonight in Moranbah to discuss the issue.
The union is concerned that the miner’s decision may set a precedent, as BMA is also pushing for a similar agreement at its Daunia coal mine.
"Whether it's Moranbah this week or Collinsville the next or Blackwater or Tieri, the thing is if it happens in one place and it's just allowed to happen without any people having the opportunity of choice, then it's going to have a real detrimental affect on the Bowen Basin and other coalfields,” CFMEU regional spokesperson Steve Smyth told the ABC.
