Tyre muffler a quiet achiever

EXPOSURE to unacceptable workplace noise can lead to ear damage and permanent hearing loss.

Alcoa’s WA Mining operations have a large fleet of earthmoving vehicles and deflating the tyres prior to removal or replacement had the potential to expose tyre fitters and maintenance employees to significant noise levels.

The air rushing from a Komatsu 730E model haul truck tyre produces over 100 decibels of noise.

A tyre deflating muffler was developed to reduce the noise emitted when air rushes from earthmoving tyres during deflation.

The innovation is a finalist in the 4th Annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards.

The Innovative Mining Solution category is sponsored by BASF Construction Chemicals Australia.

The device is portable and a handle has been welded on top to carry the muffler from job to job with a flat base added to prevent the unit from rolling.
