The Hunter Business Chamber has launched the inaugural Hunter Business Mining Forum, with Rio Tinto Coal Australia Managing Director Bill Champion announced as guest speaker.

The forum, to be held on August 11, follows the NSW Government’s announcement this week that it expects the Port of Newcastle to handle more than 300 mtpa within decades.

Chamber Chief Executive Officer Peter Shinnick said the forum was expected to attract interest from a range of sectors.

“So much of the Hunter’s business is linked to the coal and energy industries and understanding the strategic thinking of the major players such as Rio Tinto Coal is vital for business planning,” Shinnick said.

Bill Champion was appointed Managing Director Rio Tinto Coal Australia in January 2009.

He is a Director of Port Waratah Coal Services, Newcastle Coal Shippers and the Queensland Resources Council.
