VEHICLE collision has been reported as the number one cause of serious accidents in Queensland mines between 16 August and 15 October.
According to a Queensland Department of Mines and Energy’s (DME) summary of reported incidents, 22 separate incidents involving vehicles occurred in the two month period.
The DME summary reports rock-fall and fall of equipment as major causes of serious accidents and high potential incidents, with 10 separate gravity rock-fall incidents occurring between 16 August and 15 October.
In one incident, a large section of a 30 m high-wall collapsed, partly engulfing a loaded rear dump truck and an excavator, according to the summary.
The truck driver was thrown around the cabin and suffered a fractured collar bone and femur, suspected fractured pelvis, internal bleeding, and possible head and lower back injuries, according to the mines inspectorate.
Seven workers have received electric shocks in the period from 16 August to 15 October, with one man receiving entry burns to his right shoulder and exit burns to both hands, according to the summary.
