The two-day 2010 Paydirt Gold Conference got underway in Perth this morning, with the "recession-proof" gold price expected to be the biggest talking point.
The event, held at the Sheraton Perth Hotel, will be attended by a variety of prospective gold companies and will feature sector analysis, project updates and panel discussions.
Spurred by record spot prices, Australia's gold output increased 3% last year to 227 tonnes, making it the world's second largest producer.
The first speaker at the event was Newmont Asia-Pacific regional group executive Philip Stephenson who discussed the future of the company's new Boddington mine.
Boddington is expected to surpass the Kalgoorlie Super Pit as the country's largest gold producer when it moves into full production later this year.
This address was followed by presentations by Focus Minerals' chief executive Campbell Baird and his counterpart at Adamus Resources Mark Bojanjac.
The prospects of WA's Eastern Goldfields region will also be dealt with in presentations by Integra Mining, Avoca Resources, Ramelius Resources, Southern Gold and Saracen Mineral Holdings.
The State's Minister for Mines and Petroleum Norman Moore will open the tomorrow's proceedings.
