New project to offer 400 mining jobs

Vale and Aquila Resources say they'll be looking to hire around 500 construction workers and 400 miners once the Eagle Downs mine ramps up near Moranbah next year.

CQ News reports Aquila general manager coal Stephen Pilcher said while market conditions were volatile it was still a good time to open a coal mine in the Bowen Basin.

He said while there were currently 40 workers on site the number would increase to around 70 over the next 18 months.

By 2014 or 2015 the site's workforce will peak, with around 400 to 500 people employed on the operation.

“[Once operating] it will be between 350 and 380 people, including permanent employees and contractors,” Pilchard said.

With several miners and contractors cutting staff numbers throughout QLD, Aquila said it was hoping to save money by hiring some unemployed workers on lower wages.

Eagle Downs is expected to export around 4.5 million tonnes of coking coal a year for the first decade, with the ability to hit 8mt after a major expansion.

The site is expected to have a 47 year mine life.
