Mining employment on the way up

A new report has found that mining and construction has one of the brightest employment futures of any industry in Australia.

According to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey released yesterday, 23% of mining and construction employers plan to increase hiring in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The survey of 2,333 Australian employers set the seasonally adjusted Net Employment Outlook for the final quarter at +7%, up from +2% in the previous quarter.

The survey also found that 20% of transportation and utilities employers planned to increase hiring.

“Two successive quarters of improving employer forecasts are an encouraging sign that the employment market has turned the corner,” Manpower managing director Lincoln Crawley said.

But Crawley warned that despite the increased employment numbers, potential employees cannot afford to be too selective.

“The message here for jobseekers is that it is vital to stay flexible, retrain where possible and tap into networks for new opportunities,” he said.

“The economy has not contracted evenly, nor will it grow again in a uniform way, so people need to be adaptable and go where the demand is.”
