The Queensland minerals and energy sector's embrace of Saturday’s Earth Hour event is more than a symbolic gesture, according to peak representative body, the Queensland Resources Council.

Chief Executive Michael Roche said QRC member companies were among the first in the world to recognise the long-term consequences of climate change and the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

He said many QRC members were participating in the Australian Government’s Energy Efficiency Opportunities (EEO) program set up to increase the energy efficiency of Australia’s 250 largest energy users.

The following case studies illustrate examples of greenhouse gas reduction and energy efficiency strategies at work in the Queensland resources sector.
