Western Australian Minister for Regional Development Brendon Grylls yesterday unveiled plans to transform Karratha in the Pilbara from a mining town into a major regional city.
The plans, unveiled as part of the Government’s ‘Pilbara Cities’ scheme, outlined developments for the town that could see it grow to a population of up to 50,000.
According to Grylls, the town is currently hamstrung by infrastructure constraints, land supply shortages and housing affordability issues, which are all addressed in the proposal.
“This watershed plan will establish Karratha as a highly desirable place to live, work and raise a family; a future city with facilities on par with other major cities of Australia,” he said.
“The plan contains a master scheme to transform the town centre with a new main street, public-square and entry statement as well as expanded retail, commercial and residential opportunities.”
According to the president of the local Roebourne Shire, Nicole Lockwood, the plans will improve infrastructure and amenity, offer more affordable and diverse styles of housing and generate more jobs.
“These measures have been a long time coming for the residents of Karratha and there is a genuine sense of excitement in the town as we move closer to realising the dream,” she said.
