Jan Lichos - Brake Diagnostic Tool

Diesel Fitter Jan Lichos invented a brake diagnostic tool that has the potential to slash machine downtime and increase safety.

The device can be operated remotely and can identify on a moving vehicle whether or not there is a problem with a vehicle's brakes, limiting downtime.

When the brake pedal is depressed a three dimensional digital image of the vehicle appears on a screen highlighting the faulty component and its location in the vehicle.

The device can be permanently installed in the vehicle or the information uploaded into a computer via a radio link.

The device has been trialled on a variety of minesite vehicles including 769s and 773s, where the problems were located within seconds.

The brake diagnostic tool can be individually programmed to a specific make and model thus identifying the exact component (with its part number) when a fault occurs.

This device will not prevent failures from occurring. However, the quick identification of a fault will dramatically reduce the risk of accident/injury and set a new bench mark of safety in brake monitoring.

Industry, Safety and Health representative from the CFMEU Steven Smyth said the device should be recognized world wide for its safety benefits.

"It can be implemented anywhere, on trucks, cars even lawnmowers. Best of all, it can ensure the safety of every operator regardless of what type of vehicle the device has been installed on," Smyth said.
