Iluka Resources has announced that it will place the Eneabba mine into care and maintenance.
The miner said it will begin idling of the Eneabba mineral sands mine from 10 June.
The closure, due to declining ore grades, is expected to result in the loss of 40 jobs.
However, "it is expected that approximately 20 employees will remain at Eneabba to coordinate the ongoing care and maintenance, environmental monitoring and rehabilitation activities," Iluka said.
Last year Iluka cut more than 130 staff at its Eneabba, Narngulu and Capel operations in Western Australia.
The shutting down of the Eneabba mine is part of Iluka’s strategy to produce and process higher grades in South Australia, but the miner will look to recommence mineral sands operations in WA over the coming years, it said.
