Workers have been evacuated from Rio Tinto Alcan’s Weipa bauxite operation this morning, after a gas leak was identified.

One employee was injured, suffering a freeze burn to the hand.

A tank containing acetylene gas located in the main workshop at the site has been confirmed as the source of the leak.

Rio said its fire and rescue team responded to contain the leak and despite other media reports there has been no explosion.

There have been no other injuries.

“All personnel in the workshop and surrounding areas have been evacuated,” a Rio Tinto spokesperson said.

“Evacuated employees are expected to be able to return to their workplaces later this afternoon.”

Rio Tinto Alcan will investigate the cause of the incident.
