The NSW Clean Coal Council is looking to the State’s coal miners and engineers for innovation to manage and monitor emissions from coal, the burning of coal and fugitive emissions.
The Council has today invited funding applications for projects that provide research, development and demonstration of clean coal technologies, under the provisions of the NSW Clean Coal Administration Act 2008.
Funding for successful applications will come out of the $100 million provided by the NSW Government to the Clean Coal Fund. However, only a relatively small proportion of the Fund will be available for the projects, despite the high cost of research and development on technologies to reduce carbon emissions in the coal industry.
According to NSW Clean Coal Director, Rick Fowler, a significant portion of the Fund is already allocated to other projects, such as a demonstration plant for carbon capture and storage and drilling to confirm appropriate sites for geological carbon storage.
“There’s $100 million set aside over four years, but a significant amount of that money will go towards funding a demonstration plant for Carbon Capture and Storage,” Fowler told MINING DAILY.
“Also, a significant portion of that money is being set aside for exploration drilling to find storage areas. “We’re looking at a small amount of that $100 million set aside for this sort of innovation.”
Fowler also confirmed that the amount of NSW and federal funding required for a CCS demonstration plant in NSW is yet to be confirmed.
Projects that require funding must be designed for coal from mines within NSW or be directly related to aspects relevant to NSW coal production, or coal projects or reduction of emissions from coal fired power stations.
