A LARGE mining house has awarded a $75 million dollar contract for an east coast open cut coal mine.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has awarded Macmahon Holdings the contract at Saraji Open Cut Coal Mine in Queensland.

The Saraji Mine has a production capacity of 6.5 million tonnes of high grade coking coal a year and is located in the Bowen Basin, 213 kilometres south west of the Hay Point Coal Export Terminal, near Mackay.

The two year contract involves the removal of 12 million bank cubic metres of material each year.

Macmahon has commenced mobilisation of the earthmoving equipment and a workforce of 100 personnel, with mining works scheduled to commence this month.
