Death at Mt Isa mine

An Xstrata employee has been killed in an accident at George Fisher mine near Mt Isa in Queensland.

According to a statement released by the company, the incident occurred at 11:55pm Tuesday night; however, no further details have been released.

Xstrata said it will work with police and inspectors from the Mines Department to identify the cause of the accident.

All underground mining operations have been suspended for 24 hours while the investigation takes place.

Xstrata Zinc Mount Isa Executive General Manager Kevin Hendry expressed deep regret on news of the accident.

“There is nothing more important than a human life. On behalf of Xstrata Zinc and the George Fisher Mine team I extend our deepest sympathy to the family, friends and workmates of the employee,” he said.

Counselling will be offered to all of those involved.
