Contractor dies in the Pilbara

A John Holland employee has been killed at the Newman BHP Billiton site in Western Australia.

The fatality is the fifth at BHP Billiton’s Pilbara iron ore operations and the seventh at the company’s global operations this financial year.

The Mines and Port Development informed the company yesterday that a fatal accident had occurred at their Newman site in the Pilbara.

According to a statement released by BHP, the fatality did not occur at an existing operation, with mine, rail and shipping activities continuing as normal.

The West Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum said it would send an inspector to the mine to investigate the death.
