Clean coal in WA

MINING houses BP and Rio Tinto are planning to develop a $2 billion coal-fired power generation project at Kwinana in Western Australia.

The power-generation project would be fully integrated with carbon capture and storage to reduce its emissions of greenhouse gases according to BP and Rio Tinto.

This will be the first new project for Hydrogen Energy, the new company launched by BP and Rio Tinto, subject to regulatory approval.

The project would generate enough electricity to meet 15% of the demand of south west Western Australia, according to BHP and Rio Tinto.

BHP and Rio Tinto said 90% of carbon dioxide generated would be captured and stored permanently in a deep underground geological formation.
