QUEENSLAND’S peak resource body is calling on federal parties to support a national clean coal research centre.
Queensland Resources Council chief executive Michael Roche told the Queensland Power Conference that a national centre, to be located in Brisbane, would provide strong research and development capability for clean coal technologies.
“The country’s coal producers have committed to a voluntary levy that will raise an estimated $1 billion over the next 10 years to fund the demonstration and deployment of the technologies,” Roche said.
“The industry will request that the Queensland Government direct the Queensland share of that levy, approximately $600 million, to low-emission projects here in Queensland,” he said.
The funding will be overseen by the new Queensland Clean Coal Council, chaired by new Premier Anna Bligh.
