VICTORIAN safety investigators have yet to identify what caused the batter in an open cut coal mine in the Latrobe Valley to collapse last year.
On 14 November 2007, a large section of the mine batter collapsed into the open cut pit.
The Latrobe River flowed into the mine damaging mine conveyor systems and other facilities.
A Significant Incident Report [No. 1/2008] stated that hydraulic pressure in the coal joints and underlying aquifer may have contributed to batter instability.
Minerals Petroleum Regulation Director Phil Roberts from the State’s department of Primary Industries signed the report.
