The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has said carbon capture and storage technology is more critical than ever to the future of the Australian coal industry.
QRC chief executive Michael Roche said Garnut’s supplementary draft report on his climate change review will make an important contribution to the development of climate change policy in Australia and globally.
“The Queensland Resources Council will be closely studying Professor Garnaut’s analysis and recommendations on targets and trajectories over coming days,” Roche said.
“However, we do note his finding that the future of the Australian coal industry depends critically on the success of carbon capture and storage technologies, not only in Australia, but in the rest of the world, and especially in Australia’s major coal markets in Asia.
“We also note his view that there must be heavy commitments by high-income countries like Australia to funding research, development and commercialisation of low-emissions technology.
“It is therefore essential that the Federal Government’s final Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme is accompanied by a substantial financial commitment to low emissions technologies including carbon capture and storage,” he said.
