APPRENTICE Luke Single from the Burton mine in the Bowen Basin has been named Thiess Apprentice of the Year.
Single, an Engineering — Mechanical Trade apprentice, who started with Thiess in mid 2004, took home $2000 in travel vouchers and a trophy as part of the Thiess Plant Apprentice of the Year Award.
Announcing the award, Thiess Managing Director David Saxelby said the 23-year-old apprentice, also last years runner up, showed great leadership and his efforts in the field both as a fitter and serviceman were exceptional.
“Luke is not someone to stand back and wait if a decision is needed on site and he continues to display high standards of workmanship and safety,” Saxelby said.
“He has also shown strong leadership qualities at TAFE,” he said.
Thiess Group Plant Manager Bruce Kenny said the Thiess Plant Apprentice of the Year Awards helps motivate employees to perform at high levels and this increases workshop productivity.
“Thiess invests a significant amount in the future of the business by supporting training at all levels and our apprenticeship program is a good example of this,” Kenny said.
“The awards are an important part of recognition and they encourage our apprentices to embrace career opportunities within Thiess.”
The awards are in their second year and acknowledge the great work done by Thiess apprentices. They also promote safety and recognise outstanding achievements and contributions to the business and assist in attracting and retaining new apprentices by recognising talent and dedication.
Runner up Richard Brown from South Walker Creek mine was awarded a travel voucher worth $1000.
