Bill McCurry's centre-line socket safety system is a finalist in the 5th Annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards for its ability to improve occupational health and safety standards in the industry.
The Safe Compact Wedge Removal System eliminates uncontrolled movement by swinging hammers or donga systems that are currently utilised during dragline rope maintenance procedures.
The system has now been implemented in many coal mines in Queensland and is said to eliminate the use of the uncontrolled movement of the donga and hammer while also eliminating the trip and slip hazard of personnel involved in swinging the donga.
Finally, the system is said to remove the hazard of shards of metal becoming projectiles.
