THE Australian Government has given environmental approval for the $11 billion Gorgon Project in Western Australia.

The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) has welcomed the approval.

“The Gorgon Development Proposal would be the biggest single resource development project in the nation’s history,” CME acting chief executive Reg Howard-Smith said.

The Gorgon Joint Venture (GJV) between Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell will develop the Greater Gorgon gas fields, about 13km off the north-west coast of Western Australia.

The Greater Gorgon gas field is said to contain around 40 trillion cubic feet of gas, and is the nation's largest undeveloped gas resource.
