The Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (The AusIMM) annual Students Meet Industry Night will be held at the Sofitel Melbourne hotel on Tuesday 1 April.

The evening, organised by The AusIMM Melbourne Student Chapter with the AusIMM Melbourne Branch, will focus on providing opportunities for tertiary students studying in a variety of minerals industry related disciplines to meet with companies and industry leaders in an informal environment.

“The Students Meet Industry Night will give students the opportunity to directly connect and network with key companies in the Australian minerals sector,” noted Melbourne Student Chapter President James Ferguson.

“The combination of formal presentations and informal networking will provide a great way for students to learn about the vast opportunities that are available in the minerals industry. We believe that it is a unique opportunity for the companies to source potential employees from a ready pool of enthusiastic young students.”

The 2008 night is expected to attract over 300 students and a majority of Australia’s leading mineral industry companies are expected to participate.

Participating students will be drawn from Melbourne, Monash, RMIT, Swinburne, La Trobe, Victoria, Deakin and Ballarat Universities.

Major mining companies and consultancies such as BHP Billiton, Zinifex, Newcrest and AMC Consultants have already committed to sponsor the event.

A joint report by the Minerals Council of Australia and the WA Chamber of Minerals indicated that an additional 7,600 professionals would be needed to staff the minerals sector by 2015.

This skills shortage is already being felt and graduates from mining related disciplines are in high demand.

For example, the most recent AusIMM Remuneration Survey showed that in the past two years, the percentage of graduates earning more than $75,000 in their first year of work nearly doubled to 34%.

The average commencing salary in 2007 was $69,000.

In the current climate of skills shortage, the Students Meet Industry concept will promote increased interest to help meet industry skills needs, and also broaden the horizons of students who may not have previously considered a career in minerals industry.
