Missing miners confirmed dead

The plane containing the missing miners has been found, with no survivors.

The aircraft carrying the entire board of Sundance Resources went down on a flight between Cameroon’s capital Yaoundé and Yangadou in The Congo (Brazzaville) on Saturday.

"The wreckage has been found in Congo. Unfortunately there were no survivors," Cameroonian minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said overnight.

Eleven bodies have been found, although they are yet to be indentified.

The cause of the crash is not yet known.

Sundance strategic advisor George Jones said “the plane hasn’t burnt extensively, so it’s too early to tell, but it doesn’t look like an explosion or a fire.

“The cause might be, either they hit the top of a hill or the top of the trees, I don’t know exactly, but this information will be brought to our knowledge tomorrow in the course of the day,” Bakary said.

The plane was carrying the entire board of Australian iron ore miner Sundance Resources, including chairman Geoff Wedlock, director Ken Talbot, managing director Don Lewis, and fellow executives Jon Carr-Greg, Craig Oliver, and John Jones, as well as Talbot’s executive secretary Natasha Flason Brian.

Trading in Sundance has been halted, with current chief financial officer Peter Canterbury named as acting chief executive.
