Wear plates resist fatigue
Jessica Darnbrough
Caterpillar has launched a mechanically attached wear plate system that can be installed on any flat or moderately curved surface.
According to the company, the system provides long life, the ability to customize protection, ease of use, and speed of replacement.
The plates are made from the company’s formulated DH-2TM steel and slide on to weld-on base plates and are held in place with a patented compression retainer.
The low placement of that retainer allows for a greater percentage of the wear plate to be used before replacement, according to the manufacturer.
A worn wear plate can be removed, without hammering or welding, in two minutes or less using a special removal tool or a common pry bar. An entire truck body lined with MAWPS can be changed in a typical four-hour scheduled preventive maintenance.
Wear plates have recessed holes in each corner that serve as wear indicators. Those permit technicians to replace plates at the most opportune time – when full use of the plate is achieved and before damage to the base plate.
