Underground surveying
MDL Australia will showcase its rugged void scanner, the VS150 3D laser scanner, and Cavity Auto Laser Scanning (C-ALS) system on Stand 1123 during the 2008 Goldfields Mining Expo (GME).
The VS150 is designed to measure voids, stopes and rock faces in underground mining environments where access is limited and difficult.
The product can be deployed using conventional survey tripods or operated by remote control when fitted to rods, booms, masts, lifts and cranes.
At five kilograms, the two-axis-motorised VS150 is easily transported. It scans up to 200 points per second, storing this data on PDAs or laptop computers.
The data can be exported to most CAD mine survey software packages.
MDL’s C-ALS cavity monitoring system is a self-navigating, motorised robotic probe designed to enter and survey dry, abandoned mine workings or cavities.
With a diameter of just 50 mm, the unit can be deployed down pre-drilled boreholes of 65 mm or more. It then uses a miniature laser scanner to measure the three-dimensional shape of the void and its surface reflectivity.
