The first iron ore installation in Australia of Outotec PSI 500 particle size analyser has entered service with Rio Tinto Iron Ore at Paraburdoo, in the Pilbara.

According to Outotec, the PSI 500 is designed to save time labour and money while increasing product quality and value in highly competitive markets.

The PSI 500’s use of laser diffraction technology provides real time particle size analysis essential to maximising throughput and recoveries, Outotec’s application engineer for automation in Australia Brian McPherson said.

Outotec said that the PSI 500 was selected for Paraburdoo because it can accommodate varying specific gravity of solids at the site, while still not affecting accuracy in measurement; the analyser is a robust and compact technology requiring a very small footprint; and is simple to use and capable of measuring manual and random samples.

The company also provided Rio Tinto with the equipment platform, consulted with site management on the best location and provided localised training in order to help with the PSI 500’s installation at Paraburdoo.
