SPECIALIST on-site machining expertise from Furmanite will promote at AIMEX this year among other services its role in on-site maintenance for stacker/reclaimers, shovels and draglines.
In one example, Furmanite’s specialist on-site machining expertise recently enabled vital work on a massive dragline at an open cut coal mine in the Bowen Basin, Queensland, to be undertaken on-site, within a minimised time window, as part of a major dragline upgrade project. The project, undertaken at the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) operated Blackwater mine by field maintenance alliance partner Transfield Services, involved upgrade work to the drive and hoist motors and gearboxes on a Bucyrus 2570 walking dragline, to optimise the dragline efficiency. Furmanite was engaged by Transfield Services to machine all hoist and drag motor gearbox bases and the propel motor bases on the massive machine. These had to be precisely machined to within tight tolerances to facilitate the installation of new motors and gearbox units which are an integral part the upgrade. Some 40 mounting pads ranging up to 7.8 metres by 1.6 metres in size had to be machined, to a demanding tolerance of ±0.1mm at a surface finish of Ra1.6µ. The example is just one illustration of Furmanite’s specialist on-site machining expertise – extending beyond most companies’ capability zones. Others have included slew bearing mounting services (in applications from a stacker at an ore mine and a shovel at a Hunter Valley mining site, to three hydraulic excavators at Argyle Diamonds’ Kunanara diamond mine) through to drilling and reaming eighteen 45mm diameter holes to a tolerance of 0-0.05mm within a confined space on a car dumper for Hamersley Iron to replace a hydraulic arm assembly.
