Health and safety a winner

A WESTERN Australian (WA) alumina and bauxite miner has won the National Minerals Industry Safety and Health Excellence Award (2007 MINEX Award).
Worsley Alumina, a joint venture company operated by BHP Billiton, won the award for health and safety innovation at its three WA sites.
The sites are separated by hundreds of kilometres, with a bauxite mine at Boddington, an alumina refinery at Collie, and port facilities at the Port of Bunbury.
The company impressed judges with its leadership and safety culture applied through its use of systems and procedures across three complex sites, according to Minerals Council of Australia chairman Charlie Lenegan.
“The company has clear measures of competency and continuous improvement goals. The integrated approach with active and continuous improvement represents industry leading practice,” he said.
Judges also highly commended the Mt Whaleback mine in the Pilbara.
