Explorers receive practical guidance

Jessica Darnbrough

The Minerals Council of Australia welcomed the release of the Victorian Code of Practice for Mineral Exploration to provide practical guidance to explorers regulated under the Mineral Resources (SustainableDevelopment) Act 1990.

Minerals Council of Australia’s Victorian executive director Chris Fraser said the MCA was pleased to see the release of this Code.

“Victoria has experienced a surge in exploration activity over the past few years and guidance on how to conduct exploration to meet Victoria’s regulatory requirements and environmental standards is critical to ensuring Victoria continues to be explored in a sustainable way.”

Recent Victorian Government initiatives have led to strong interest from mining companies to explore Victoria’s untapped mineral resources.

“Many companies are exploring in Victoria for the first time, seeking new gold, copper, coal and nickel prospects along with other base metals. A Code of Practice enables those companies new to Victoria’s regulatory environment to achieve leading practice,” Fraser said.

The MCA continues to work with the Victorian Government, through the Department of Primary Industries, in developing guidance material to ensure Victoria is a desirable place for mineral exploration and development and to ensure its member companies continue to operate within the principles of sustainable development.
