Contractor improving community relations

Daniel Hall

Downer EDI Mining is a finalist in the 4th Annual Australian Mining Prospect Awards for its commitment to long-term Indigenous employment and business programs, and a commitment to community development.

The company focuses on accessibility and promotion of sustainable education, health and leadership training for Indigenous youth.

This approach to Indigenous affairs is providing sustainable economic and social outcomes for regional and remote communities across Australia.

The company’s recruitment strategy focuses on fostering long term, close relationships with current and future employees through its community engagement strategy.

The company is one of only four companies to fund and sign the Memorandum of Understanding between the Commonwealth Government, Minerals Council of Australia and the resource industry.

Downer EDI Mining’s commitment to community development is a response to the growing need for community awareness in the resource industry.

The company now employs more than 150 Aboriginal workers in its operations.

The majority of the Indigenous placements within the company are in operator positions, however, the company boasts a number of Indigenous employees in professional and leadership roles.
