The Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy and the School of Mining Engineering, University of New South Wales (UNSW) have joined forces to host the inaugural Future of Mining Conference held at the University from today until Thursday 21 November.
Conference chairman Dr Serkan Saydam told Australian Mining the conference was established to generate communication between different stakeholders in the industry.
“The current climate of sustained global minerals demand, coupled with declining ore grades and a range of social and environmental challenges, presents a range of challenges for the future,” he said.
“The Conference will bring together experts from operational, research, technology & services, government as well as stakeholders such as the Women In Mining network, to develop strategic and technologically sound scenarios.
“The current global financial crisis highlights the need for strategic and comprehensive forecasting with regards to issues affecting the industry.”
AusIMM President Peter McCarthy will deliver the opening address at the Conference this morning and Minerals Council of Australia chief executive Mitchell Hooke will be the key note speaker for the day.
With over 125 delegates from across Australia already confirmed, Dr Saydam hopes the conference will be a success and establish itself as a regular event on the mining calendar.
