Located 120 km form Mackay in the Bowen Basin region of Queensland, the mine has achieved record production levels in 2008, up 38% on the same period last year, without any recordable injuries, despite setbacks from severe weather and flooding.
Hail Creek continues to invest strongly in its employees and currently claims the highest percentage of women in the mining operations area of any coal mine in Queensland.
Since commencing operations in 2003, Hail Creek has received a number of awards at local, state and national levels for its commitment to sustainable development and ensuring positive environmental outcomes for the community in which it operates.
The mine has developed and implemented a Community Development Fund, which is the centrepiece of the project's commitment to the local community. The Fund addresses critical issues through consultation with local community groups in a bid to foster the development of skills within the community and to increase the level of access to appropriate vocational training and education.
The mine was also named a state finalist in the 2008 Queensland Mining Industry Health and Safety Innovation Awards for reducing maintenance intervention by engineering out components that had high failure rates in 9020 Draglines.
