The Australian Coal Association has launched a comprehensive website explaining the new generation of low emissions coal technologies and their role in addressing climate change, the executive director of the Australian Coal Association (ACA) Ralph Hillman told a press conference in Canberra today.
“The Australian coal industry is working with Australian Governments and the scientific and research communities on a new generation of coal technologies that will reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere from coal fired power stations by as much as 90%,” Hillman said.

The new interactive website will explain carbon capture and storage as well as the work the coal industry is currently undertaking.
Hillman said market research, carried out on the ACA’s behalf earlier this year by the polling company UMR, found there was little knowledge about what the coal industry is doing to reduce CO2 emissions from the burning of coal.
Likewise there is little understanding of the workings and effectiveness of low emissions coal technologies and the contribution they can make to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Australia and in heavy coal using countries like China and India.
A recent study by the International Energy Agency stated that CCS technologies could reduce global emissions by as much as 20% by 2050.
“While these technologies are not cheap, the coal industry accepts Professor Ross Garnut’s view that it would be far more expensive for the planet if we do not proceed with their speedy deployment,” Hillman said.
“Our recent research reinforced something we have known for some time: the phrase ‘clean coal’ is both controversial and confusing.
“We want to focus on the new generation of technologies to reduce greenhouse emissions by capturing and storing CO2.”
